Wall Mounted TV Design Ideas

If you've got a new LCD or plasma flat-screen television, mount it to the wall and design around it to create a look that fits your space and taste. Depending on the size of the area, a wall-mounted television presents a difficult design-around challenge, but with a little forward planning, you can do it.

Build It In

If you have a large space and a need for organizational space, create a built-in unit around where you want your flat screen, wall-mounted television to go. Sketch out the design, leaving a space in the middle or to the side for your television. The position of your television in the design depends on the overall layout of the space. Add shelving to store the DVD player, the cable box and other electronics, and construct cubbyholes for DVDs, CDs and other entertainment. As you design, remember to leave space to store any special elements, like an old gaming console or pictures of your latest trip with the family.

Shelve It

If a built-in unit isn't for you, you can still create a shelving unit around your wall-mounted television. Purchase a simple shelving unit, such as closet track shelving, from an organizational or home improvement store. Install the tracks on the walls, and position the shelves as needed. Depending on the type of shelving you get, you can even purchase metal baskets and other elements to help with DVDs or other entertainment storage.

Hide It

To avoid looking at your television when it's not in use, hide it. Add a sliding door or hinged door to a built-in unit to keep your television hidden, or attach a simple wide blind from the ceiling for a hidden television quick fix. For a more unusual look, create a frame around your television to make it look like a picture. If you're the crafty sort, make your frame hinged and create a panel out of wood or mirror glass to slip inside the frame to hide the television.
