How to: Wall Mounts in Drywall

Mounting a shelf on drywall where there are no inside studs requires special consideration. Screwing into the drywall will not provide the needed support for heavy objects. To mount a shelf on a drywall so that the weight of the shelf will not be a burden, you will need some special anchor mounts. A few tools commonly found around the house will also be needed.

Instructions

    1

Place a spirit level on the wall where you want to mount the shelf. Angle the level until the bubble is between the two lines. Draw a line against the bottom of the level with a grease pencil.

    2

Place the top of the shelf against the line that was drawn.

    3

Push the grease pencil through the hole in each of the two shelf supports attached beneath the shelf to make marks on the wall.

    4

Drill a hole in the drywall through each of the marks made with the grease pencil with a portable drill; the hole should be slightly smaller than the anchor to ensure a snug fit. Plastic drywall anchors will expand when you insert screws; metal anchors are turned into the holes much like screws. Place an anchor completely into each hole so it is flush with the wall surface.

    5

Place the shelf against the wall so that the holes in the shelf support line up with the anchors. Place a screw through each of the holes in the shelf supports and into the anchors with a Phillips screwdriver.
