How to: Wall Mounts in Drywall
Mounting a shelf on drywall where there are no inside studs requires special consideration. Screwing into the drywall will not provide the needed support for heavy objects. To mount a shelf on a drywall so that the weight of the shelf will not be a burden, you will need some special anchor mounts. A few tools commonly found around the house will also be needed.
Instructions
- 1
Place a spirit level on the wall where you want to mount the shelf. Angle the level until the bubble is between the two lines. Draw a line against the bottom of the level with a grease pencil.
2Place the top of the shelf against the line that was drawn.
3Push the grease pencil through the hole in each of the two shelf supports attached beneath the shelf to make marks on the wall.
4Drill a hole in the drywall through each of the marks made with the grease pencil with a portable drill; the hole should be slightly smaller than the anchor to ensure a snug fit. Plastic drywall anchors will expand when you insert screws; metal anchors are turned into the holes much like screws. Place an anchor completely into each hole so it is flush with the wall surface.
5Place the shelf against the wall so that the holes in the shelf support line up with the anchors. Place a screw through each of the holes in the shelf supports and into the anchors with a Phillips screwdriver.
