How to Mount a Flat-screen LCD on a Metal Stud Wall
The sleek design of a flat-screen LCD television allows it to take up very little space in a room, a feature that is appreciated by many homeowners. A flat-screen TV generally is either placed on an a stand to keep it upright on a cabinet, or it is mounted to a wall. If you prefer the wall-mount idea, you must secure your flat-screen LCD TV to the wall's stud frame. Metal stud walls often can't support the weight of a wall-mounted LCD TV, but extra attention to weight distribution may help overcome the problem.
Instructions
- 1
Locate where on the wall you want to mount the flat-screen LCD. Have someone help you hold it up to the wall to determine the height. Make a mark at the bottom of the screen indicating the height.
2Locate studs with a stud finder in the area where you made the mark. Mark the position of the studs on the wall for future reference. You want to find three studs to install the TV on a steel stud wall so that you can disperse the weight of the television. An extra-long bracket is used for the purpose.
3Stand the LCD television up and look on the back for its mounting brackets. They might be hidden behind plastic covers. If they are covered, pop them off with the flat edge of a knife.
4Loosen the bracket slides that hold the two pieces of the bracket together. One side connects to the back of the television and the other to the wall. Once the wall part is installed, they are slid back together.
5Slip the bracket onto the back of the TV and tighten it down. Measure from the bottom of the LCD flat-screen TV up to the bracket.
6Go to the wall where you made the mark for the bottom of the LCD flat screen. Measure up from that mark the distance you measured in Step 5. Make a new mark. This is where the bracket should be placed.
7Extend the wall bracket out so that the mounting holes reach the locations of the metal studs. Place the bracket on the wall at the location of the new mark. Put a level on the bracket and adjust it so that it is horizontal to the floor. Mark the mounting holes with a pencil.
8Set the bracket aside and drill the pilot holes for the bracket. Use a metal drill bit so that it easily goes through the metal studs. Place the bracket back on the wall, and screw in toggle bolts through the mounting holes and into the studs. Use these instead of sheet-metal screws. Get bolts that will hold a weight of at least 50 pounds each. Attaching six of these into the mounting holes across the three studs should disperse the weight of the TV sufficiently.
9Attach the cables to the back of the LCD TV and lift it up to the bracket. Slide the two parts of the bracket back together, and tighten it down so that they don't slide apart.
