Mount Your Flat Screen on the Wall
Whether your flat screen TV is 32 inches or 60 inches, you can save space by mounting it on the wall. The first step is to find the general area suitable to your TV-watching habits. For the best picture, viewers should be no closer than 1.5 times the screen size and no further away than two times the size -- a range of 60 to 80 inches for a 40-inch screen. Think of how many people will be watching at one time and how many of them you can seat in the preferred range, then decide which area in your house will work best.
Instructions
- 1
Find a spot on the wall that puts the center of the screen 40 to 45 inches off the floor, a comfortable height for seated viewers to watch. Locate the nearest electrical outlet and measure the TV cord to confirm that it can reach that far. Use a stud finder to locate two studs in the wall that will support the television; if you can't find studs, select a different place to hang the set.
2Pry the cover off the mounting holes on the back of your television and screw on the mounting bracket. Keep your TV upright on its pedestal while you do this or place it face down on a soft surface or cloth that won't mar the screen.
3Line the mounting holes on the wall bracket up with the center of the studs. Use a carpenter's level to verify the bracket is level, and then drill holes through the wall into the studs. Secure the bracket to the studs with lag screws and a socket wrench; confirm that it's still level -- start over if it is not.
4Attach the cables to the television. Raise it into position -- Home Depot recommends you have someone help you support it -- and lock the TV mounting arms onto the wall plate. Confirm that every connection holds, even when you tug on it gently.
