Advice on How to Mount a TV on a Wall

With modern TVs being thinner and lighter than yesterday's tube television sets, it's becoming more common to mount TVs on the wall. Mounting a TV adds a clean, modern look to your home and saves space on a bulky TV stand. You must take the proper precautions when installing a TV mount, or you may end up with a lopsided display or, even worse, a broken TV.

Instructions

    1

Choose a spot to mount the TV. Ideally, the TV should be somewhere between your eye level of when you sit down and stand up. If the TV is mounted too high, it can cause neck strain as you will constantly have to look up while watching it.

    2

Use a stud finder to find a stud in your chosen spot. It's necessary to drill into a stud as TVs are generally heavy and need as much support as possible to secure them in place. Mark a spot on the stud with a pencil.

    3

Hold a level vertically against the marked spot on the stud. Look at the air bubble in the level to ensure it's even and draw a 1 foot vertical line directly on top of the stud location. This line will act as a guide for the stud location.

    4

Hold the back half of the TV mount against the wall, so the center of the mount holes line up with the line you drew in the previous step.

    5

Drill screws into each hole of the wall mount, usually two or three holes, but don't tighten them all the way. The ideal screws should come included with the wall mount.

    6

Hold the level on top of the mount to ensure it is level. When you are positive, fasten the screws with the drill to secure the mount in place. Double-check that the mount is level and make any adjustments, if necessary.

    7

Attach the front half of the mount to the back of the TV. Depending on your TV, the process for this will differ, so read the instruction manual to get the best results.

    8

Connect the two halves of the mount together according to the directions of your particular mount. Again, this process will differ depending on your model.
