How to Extend a TV Wall Bracket

How to Extend a TV Wall Bracket

TV wall mounting brackets are made to accommodate the standard 16-inch spacing between wall studs. If your home has wall studs spaced farther apart than 16 inches, extend the wall bracket so you can mount your TV to the wall. To extend the bracket, you need to run 2x4s across the wall to your uniquely spaced wall studs and install the TV mount to these 2x4s.

Instructions

    1

Use a stud finder to locate two vertical studs inside the drywall. Measure the distance the studs are separated and cut both 2x4s to the same size as the separation distance of the studs. Measure the vertical distance between the mounting holes of the wall plate.

    2

Hold one of the 2x4s horizontally against the wall so each end lies against the wall studs. Tighten a lag bolt through each side of the 2x4 into the wall stud. Repeat with the other 2x4, making sure to separate the 2x4s vertically the same distance as the vertical distance of the wall plate's mounting holes.

    3

Hold the wall plate against the 2x4s and tighten a lag bolt through each mounting hole into the 2x4s.

    4

Align the VESA holes (the holes in the center of the back side of the TV that allow you to connect it to a wall mount) on the TV bracket of the wall mount with the VESA holes on the TV. Place the VESA screws through the bracket and tighten the bracket to the TV using a Phillips screwdriver.

    5

Carry the TV to the wall plate and insert the connections on the TV bracket into the connections on the wall plate. Insert the security bolt of the wall mount and tighten with a wrench.
